THE MAILBOX

Published on January 2021

Annie gave a big stretch and as she sniffed the air she wondered why the weather didn’t feel right. Baby was already up watching the smoke rise from the neighbour’s chimney.

“Oh look Baby! Look at the frost diamondson the grass. I wish they were real.”

“I bet you do because you can’t have too much “bling” now, can you?” answered Baby.

“Oh no Baby! A girl has to have her bling.”

“Does the weather feel right to you, Baby?”

“Now that you mention it, Annie, I am starting to wonder where winter is. Other years we have had snow by now.”

“Snow! Did I heard the word snow?” came a yell from over in the corner where Joseph was starting to stir.

“Yes, Joseph, you did.” yelled Annie.

Before they knew it, there stood Joseph looking out the window.

“Are you having a hard time seeing this morning? There is no snow out there!”

“We were just wondering where it was because last years at this time the ground was covered.”

“Wouldn’t that be nice, Baby, to have snow on the ground?”

“Joseph, are you alright? You never had any interest if it snowed or not.”

“That’s right Annie because I was curled up sleeping away in my cozy bed. All I had to think about was getting my meals on time.”

Suddenly, Joseph started to do this funny dance – jumping up and down braying.

“Are you alright?” asked Baby.

“I am just asking the Snow gods for some snow.”

Baby and Annie just shook their heads in wonder.

“Joseph, did you have enough sleep last night? I am totally confused with your action asking for snow.” Baby asked.

“I kind of surprise myself sometimes but I hope to see snow soon.”

The day was moving along as it always does. Baby and Annie ha decided to check if there was anything interesting in the pasture.

“Joseph must have decided to have a sleep.”

“I think, Annie, it is best that we let him get some sleep.”

The next couple of days, Joseph was starting to worry Baby and Annie as he was so quiet. Every now and then he would look out the door, mutter something and walk back to his bed.

Everyone was getting a bit concerned over how Joseph was feeling. There was nothing wrong with his eating, plus he would go out with Eugene the same as Annie did.

Everyone was fast asleep when, out of the blue, there came this very loud noise.

“Annie, Baby, Joseph – are you alright?”

“What was that, Jake>” Baby asked.

“It is a mystery right now, but I guess we better investigate.” Havier added as he told the Littles to stay close.

As they turned the corner, there stood Joseph with a big smile on his face.

“Joseph. What are you doing over here in the middle of the night?”

“It happened! YES, it happened!” Joseph yelled as he danced up and down.

“What has happened, Joseph?”

“Look out the window. It is SNOWING! Can’t you see, Havier? The Snow Gods answered my request and brought snow!”

Sure enough, the ground and the trees were covered.

“Ok Joseph. What is this obsession with the snow?”

“Baby, it is like this…..NO MORE HARNESS! NO MORE MAILBOX!”

“Oh Joseph, do you mean to tell me that this has all been about going over to the mailbox?” Annie asked.

“Winter is the time of rest, don’t you agree? It is alright for you Annie, you don’t have to pull a cart.”

“Joseph, if you weren’t so full of mischief…..” Annie answered.

“I just like to push a few buttons every now and then.” Joseph laughed.

“Well, Littles, let’s go back and finish our sleep before daylight comes.”

Moments later from the corner………

“Food Gods, do you suppose you can see fit to help get extra for breakfast?

The snow better be there in the morning as it was my turn for the mailbox.”

“JOSEPH – GOOD NIGHT!”

Hi everyone. Hope you are all staying safe and healthy.

See you next month!
