Stories from "The Barn" April

Through a tiny hole in the door, Baby could see no clouds in the sky.  The sun was even trying to shine.

“Why am I in the barn?” thought Baby.

“TC, can you see out your window?” asked Baby.

“Sure, Baby.  What’s the matter?” replied TC.

“Why are we in?  And why is my halter on? “ asked Baby.

Far from the other side of the big barn came,

“Oh Baby, that means that the vet is coming,” said Missy.

“THE VET!!!!” shouted Baby.

Scout looks over at Baby.  “It’s just the vet.”

“Yeah, Scout, that’s easy for you to say but the vet has needles and she puts this funny thing on my belly and it is cold,” replied Baby.

Joseph was standing in his stall listening to what was being said and not understanding why Baby was so upset.

“Oh Baby, it’s not as bad as you think it is.” said Joseph.

“Okay, we’ll see how brave you are when the vet comes,” replied Baby.

Suddenly, in the distance came the sound of a truck coming towards the bar.  TC announced to the barn, “She’s here!!!!!”

“Scout, will you go first please, please?” asked Baby.

“Alright.  Just this once I will.”  Scout straightened his neck to see if he could see the vet.  She was no stranger to him as he knew he needed to have the needles so he wouldn’t get sick.

“Relax guys.  She has gone into the big barn first,” Scout told Baby and Joseph.  Silence fell on the barn as the vet began checking Missy, Seeker and TC.

BANG!!!  The door closed on the big barn.  Seconds later the door swung open and there was the vet.  She looked at the little guys, remarking how cute they were.

“Cute!! If we are so cute then why do we have to have needles.  Just give us some treats!!” thought Baby.

The vet decided to look at Joseph first.  His eyes got really big!  “NO! NO! I have to watch and see what she does with Baby and Scout first before she looks at me,” Joseph thought.

“I am going to turn my back to her and keep very quiet.  Maybe she will forget about me,” hoped Joseph.

The vet remarked that she hadn’t seen a miniature Donkey before.

“Great!!,” thought Joseph as he placed his head tightly in the corner of the stall, closing his eyes as tight as he could, hoping that the vet would go away.  Suddenly, Joseph felt something touching his tail.  “WHAT!?!?   She’s going to

start with me!  Well, I’m going to have to put my tail between my legs so she can’t get it.”

No matter how hard the vet tried she couldn’t get hold of Joseph’s tail.

“Will both of you stop!!  It’s no big deal,” said Scout.

The vet said it was time for Joseph to cooperate.

“So, that’s what she thinks,” thought Joseph, then adjusted his legs so they wouldn’t move.  “Let’s see what she can do now,” thought Joseph.  Gently the vet started working her magic.  It was too much and before Joseph knew it, he was face to face with the vet.  All he heard her say was that “it works every time”.  Embarrassed, and still having to face the vet, Joseph decided to hang his head, not looking at anyone.

Do you know what she is going to do, Baby?” whispered Joseph.                  “Yes, Joseph., I know but I don’t like it.”

Baby thought for a minute.  “Are you thinking what I am, Scout?” asked Baby.

“What’s that Baby?”

“I don’t think Joseph has seen a vet before.”

“OH YES I HAVE!!” shouted Joseph.

“Then what did she do?” asked Baby.

“I can’t remember,” Joseph answered in a low voice.

“Yep, he hasn’t seen a vet,” Baby said to Scout.

For a minute Baby forgot how scared he was of the vet and asked Scout if they should help Joseph out.

“Not a bad idea, Baby,” said Scout.

“Do you remember the first time the vet came to see you?”

“Oh, yes!” Baby said, as he thought about that visit.

Moments later Baby saw the vet taking out the needle.  Trying to be brave he looked at Joseph, saying “It’s not going to hurt too much.  I promise.  We will be right here with you, Joseph.  It will be over before you know it.”

Baby continued talking to Joseph as the vet gave Joseph his needle.

“Baby, I am getting scared standing here,” said Joseph.

“You don’t have to be.  It is all done”.

“WHAT!!??” shouted Joseph.

After calming down, Joseph looked at Baby and said, “I didn’t feel anything.”

“Do you know why, Joseph?   We worked as a team – you, Scout and me.  Things work better as a team.  Right Scout?”

“Right Baby.”

Baby felt like a big brother when the vet came to him.  He was still afraid but he knew that Scout and Joseph were there with him.  Scout was next.

Before anyone knew it, the sun came out and the birds were singing.  The barn doors opened.  Everyone was off to have fun in the field for the afternoon.

Hi everyone!  The next time you have to see the doctor for a needle to stay well and you are afraid, think about us.  Always remember to help someone that may be afraid.  Our story next month will be about sharing and a birthday party.  Hope you enjoyed our story!

See you next time….Good Bye!   Baby, Joseph and Scout
