RENO
Written by LeonaPublished on January 2020
No one day is the same when it comes to life at the barn. This morning was no different. Joseph had just forced his eyelids open to see what kind of day it was going to be when Baby passed by.
“Looks like we are going to be under construction.”
“Is that right, Baby?” Well wake me when it’s over.” said Joseph.
“I think you will be up before you know it.”
Just then the door opened allowing this funny-looking machine to roll in.
When Annie turned the corner there were no words to describe the look on her face.
“What on earth?!?!?!?!?”
“I was wondering the same thing, Annie, when I first saw it.” answered Baby.
“Maybe we are being evicted!”
“Why would you say a thing like that, Joseph?”
“I don’t know. I just wanted to throw it out there, Annie.”
“Joseph, that is not funny. We could be without a home and then what would we do?”
“No Littles, that is not going to happen. The barn is just getting a small reno.” Havier added as he came in to see what was happening.
“Reno on what? We are alright the way we are. Wait! Maybe someone else is coming to live with us? Baby replied.
“Wouldn’t it be nice if it was a girl and I would have company.”
“Annie, you have us and aren’t we company?”
“You are, Baby, but you know girl talk.”
“You could ask me and I would do a spa day with you, Annie.”
“Right, Joseph and you don’t like water.”
“Oh! I kind of forgot that. It does involve water.”
“Why don’t we wait and see what it is all about?”
“I like that Jake. That means I don’t have to think up something for you to start wondering, “What if…?”
It was like an echo travelling through the barn as everyone shouted, “JOSEPH”!.
“I think we have everything we need to get this job done. Let’s get started. Wait! We forgot something. We have to run a rope across to keep it safe for everyone when the machine starts up.” Leona said.
“YEA! We are getting front row seats.” shouted Annie.
In minutes there were bags being opened, water hoses placed on a hook on the wall, shovels, safety glasses and gravel.
“Wow! This must be a big job with all the stuff that is here.”
“Sort of looks that way Baby.” whispered Havier.
In minutes the shovels went into action taking the stuff from the bags and putting it into this big hole in the machine along with the water from the hose and gravel. Suddenly it happened when the machine came on. All it did was go around and around.
“Oh no! I think it is getting sick. Look at that stuff falling out of the hole!”
“I agree, Annie. I would be getting sick if I turned over that many times.” Baby said.
“Havier, what are they doing? It sounds like it is going to blow up! Maybe this wasn’t a good idea.” Joseph whispered.
“It is okay Littles. We will all see in a minute.”
“See! See! I told you it was going to be sick but you wouldn’t believe me! It is all coming out on the floor! I wonder who is going to clean that up?” shouted Annie as she turned her head.
Then they started to smooth the wet stuff out with a trowel.
Annie turned around to speak to Joseph.
“Where’s Joseph?”
“Oh, he just went around the corner.” Jake replied.
During the next few minutes Joseph returned to find that all that mess was contained behind some boards and everything was put away.
“See you soon for supper.” Leona shouted as they went out the door.
“Joseph, where did you go when you left?” asked Baby.
“Let’s just say I had a ‘What If’ moment.”
“Now, I have to say that was quite the reno, wouldn’t you say?”
“I am still trying to figure this one out. What is going to happen when those boards are taken away? Is it going to run all over the floor?” Joseph asked as he sized up the whole situation.
“What you saw was the mixing of cement that, once mixed, turns into a floor. The machine wasn’t being sick Annie, it was doing its job of mixing everything up. It will be hard soon. Does that make sense?”
“Yes, Havier, it does.” Baby answers.
“Wow! You are smart Havier.”
Well, thank you Annie, but it is just age.”
After a few days had passed the rope was taken down. The cement had hardened into a nice piece of smooth floor.
“Who is going to be the first one to check it out?”
“Annie?”
“I don’t know Baby. What if I do step on it and I end up in China because it is not hard enough.”
“That would be horrible, seeing where you can’t speak the language.”
“Oh my nerves Joseph!!!!”
“Just kidding. A spa day isn’t for me but I can walk beside you for comfort to check the new floor our Annie, if you wish. Maybe Baby would like to join us.”
“I don’t know what to say, Joseph, except I would love it if you both would.”
On that note they walked across the new floor – 3 abreast – as Havier and Jake looked on.
Hi Everyone, that is our story for this month. The lesson we learnt was that there are times you need to reach out and lend a helping hand to one another when they are afraid like Annie was. Remember to check with the ones that know about how thick the ice is in the pond before trying out your skates. Winter is a fun time but stay safe.
