AM I FAMOUS NOW?

Published on January 2021

It was about an hour after sunrise when Joseph realized it was going to be hot. As he looked around, in his mind he could see that special patch of grass that was calling his name – not only to fill his belly but for a long, lazy summer sleep.

Annie and Baby had gotten an early morning start to their day. It is a known fact that you didn’t wait for Joseph to start your day!

“Joseph, it is nice to see that you are joining us this morning.” Annie said.

“These days there is nothing to get excited about so I might as well work on keeping myself handsome and fit.”

“By sleeping half the morning away? Oh, I see it is going to be one of those days for sure.” Annie yelled as she went for a drink. Baby just shook his head.

Not long after, the hose was being pulled out the front door.

“That means just one thing, and I am not participating. There is just no way!” On that note, Joseph took off to the far corner of the barn.

“Hi Baby and Annie. I see you are here, but it is Joseph that I am looking for. I don’t imagine either of you know where he is? My guess, he caught a glimpse of the hose.”

“Want to bet on how long it takes Eugene to find him?” Baby said to Annie.

“Sure. I really need a good back rub.”

“Annie, what makes you think you are going to win?”

“I will just watch. I say 3 minutes.”

“Ok. I say 5 minutes.” Baby added.

Eugene walked around to all of Joseph’s hiding spots but came up empty. As he was about to climb up on the ladder to get a better view……

“Joseph, you almost had me fooled, but those long ears gave your hiding place away. Come along Buddy, this won’t take long.”

As they walked past, Annie had this smirk on her face.

“You made a bet, didn’t you?”

“Yep, and I won.” whispered Annie.

At this point Joseph wasn’t at all happy.

“It will be over before you know it Joseph and look at it this way. You will be so handsome and shiny.”

“Thanks Baby. I guess I can look at it that way. I think, after this is done, I am going to find myself a dirt hole and take my kind of bath.”

“I wish Havier and Jake hadn’t gone to the big tree so they could have seen this.” Annie said as they watched.

Before long, the bath was done and Joseph was being taken inside.

“Aren’t we getting baths too? And where are you going Joseph?”

“Three guesses Annie and the first two don’t count.”

“But Joseph! I am so confused!”

“Yep. I guess I am off to jail to stay clean.”

Joseph stood with his head in the corner as the gate closed. Annie and Baby decided to stay inside with him.

“Baby, did you hear that?”

“What, Annie?”

“I will be right back.”

“We have company everyone. I will let Havier and Jake know so they can join us. Four people and one of them seems to know our owners. I will be right back. I have to go and make sure I look good for the company.” Annie shouted as she ran off.

It didn’t take long to see that the focus of this visit was Joseph.

“I think we should get Joseph and begin.” said one of the visitors.

“Did I miss anything? How do I look?”

“Annie, I have to tell you that this is all about Joseph. They are going to do a short video of him. Are you okay?” asked Baby.

“Thanks Baby, but I am fine and besides, you never know, one of them might be a scout for the next time they need a donkey for something.” Annie lowered her head as she answered.

Baby knew that Annie’s feelings were a little hurt, but sometimes in life you don’t always get what you want. All he could do was to be there for both of them.

Up to this point, Joseph hadn’t seen any of the visitors. There was a lady in the barn asking a lot of questions as Eugene got the harness ready. As Joseph came out of the barn he caught sight of a familiar face. It was the lady from the Ex in Windsor. As Eugene was finishing harnessing Joseph to his cart, a question came up.

“What makes Joseph so popular?”

“Independence and personality. If he wants to do something, he will and if not, he won’t or he will just do it his way. The crowd never knows what his reaction is going to be. The crowd really gets behind him when he is doing a timed event. All you can hear is – “Go Joseph. Go! He usually has just one speed and that is “slow” most of the time.” Eugene replied.

My, my, my, Joseph thought to himself. Isn’t this interesting?

“I would say we are ready for Joseph’s debut.” said Eugene as he made sure all was safe and comfortable for Joseph.

“Is the camera ready for the video?” asked the other lady.

“Yes. We are ready.” answered the cameraman.

Baby looked over at Joseph and he could see that familiar look that something was going through his mind.

“Annie, take a look at Joseph and tell me if that isn’t the look of mischief.”

“Oh my, Baby. He is up to something.”

“Once in the field Joseph set the pace both for himself as well as the cameraman who was walking alongside. As if it was on cue, Joseph slowly moved into a slow trot to start, picking up the speed as he went, at times causing the cameraman to do the same.

Annie and Baby started to laugh as they knew now what was in Joseph’s mind.

As things came to a close, the visitors expressed their thanks and were off to the next stop.

“Now, that is what I call a wrap, everyone.” Jake added.

“Getting a bath and doing a drive – I would say you got a good workout.” Baby said.

“I did, but not as much as the cameraman did.” Joseph laughed as he started out to find that patch of dirt.
