UNIACKE QUARRY NEWS UPDATE as of October 24, 2023
1. The Municipality of East Hants (MEH) Council formally voted to oppose the Uniacke Quarry expansion on September 26, 2023.
2. The local residents of Mount Uniacke turned out in large numbers to express their expansion concerns and opposition to a "times ten" expansion of the quarry at a community meeting on September 26, 2023 at the Uniacke Firehall.
3. October 4, 2023 - an extraordinary concussion of three massive quarry blasts (within a 20 minute window) not only shook our village of Mount Uniacke to its core, but residences and businesses +25km away reported likewise! Hundreds of complaints were lodged immediately after these explosions.
4. NSECC Minister Tim Halman halted the expansion application on October 13, 2023 until NCCI is in compliance with the Environment Act and their existing IA.
5. NSECC ICE is investigating NCCI based on multiple formal complaints of at least 14 non-compliances of their existing IA, which does not include the blasts that occurred on October 4.
6. The Uniacke quarry's IA expires July 6, 2025.
7. More large double-tandem gravel trucks than ever have been reported on Trunk #1 and the Uniacke Mines Road during the past two weeks in October 2023!
