Good day Mount Uniacke, we hope you have enjoyed your summer as much as we have. With fall and hurricane season right around the corner we would like to offer some safety tips to keep you safe as cooler temperatures and stormy weather debate coming a-knocking. You probably have your firewood stacked and seasoned for cooler weather, but have you thought about what’s lurking in your chimney. NFPA 211 recommends annual inspection and cleaning of your chimney, whether you used it once or one hundred times to ensure that your chimney is safe and clean. A chimney with a build up of creosote or bird nests can lead to smoke backing up into your home or worse fire within the chimney.

Nova Scotia EMO recommends that you have emergency supplies for at least 72 hours. Thes supplies include but are not limited to Water, food, batteries for flashlights and wireless equipment and a full tank of fuel for your car. If you lose power, do not approach and more specifically cross downed wires whether that be on foot or in your vehicle as they may still be carrying electricity that is harmful to life. If you do lose power and you operate a generator place it in a well-ventilated area and ensure the exhaust is not directed towards openings in your home such as windows doors and dryer vents.
