STOP THE QUARRY EXPANSION
STOP THE QUARRY

On one of the latest quarry blasts (June 10) there were so many people who were vocal about feeling and hearing - THE MASSIVE CONCUSSION - that enough is enough. We were told by NSECC (Environment) that their Inspector, assigned to this quarry, was supposed to be making a post-blast visit to establish some things about the blast, given the number of public complaints received. So, before there's another blast.......if you haven't already written to follow up on this inspector's findings, please give a thought to doing so.
A couple of other vital points to keep in mind and ask about - if you're inclined to write Environment.
#1) This quarry's current 10 yr operating approval expires this month (July 25). Environment said, in a recent letter to a resident, found here in this group's postings, that the quarry would be 'required' to make a special request to Environment for a renewal of that operating approval. As of that letter, dated mid to late June, they were indicating that hadn't happened. NOTE: as an update to #1 comment / note - A NEW APPLICATION HAS BEEN SENT TO, AND RECEIVED. BY THE GOVERNMENT.
#2) In regards to the quarry's 'Under Review' status for the ten times expansion up there, there were a number of issues that hadn't been satisfactorily met, in order for Environment to give 'approval' for this expansion. The deadline for their providing this missing criteria is September 16/25. Should they provide the missing criteria by that deadline and gain approval to expand and operate for another 50 yrs, there is supposed to be a 40 day public comment window - no idea what happened to all the public comments that were submitted in the beginning of this expansion bid. Why isn't Environment using those many comments to weigh in on their decision making? That doesn't sound right!
If you'd like to keep tabs on this status yourself, check out the following link: https://novascotia.ca/nse/ea/mount-uniacke-quarry-expansion/
Under the heading 'Project Documents' you'll see 'Comments - Parts 1 through 5'. I am uncertain how you are able to read those 185 public comments. Perhaps someone can share here if they figure it out?
Bottom line: If any residents living on the Uniacke Mines Road, see trucks operating in and out of the quarry, 'business as usual', AFTER July 25th, you should be making this known to Environment by writing to them and asking about the quarry's status. Any continued operations in an aggregate quarry capacity, after that date, will be ILLEGAL activity. Environment won't know unless the community residents who can see, alert them to the fact.
So, to recap:
Please write in and ask about the June 10th blast report findings. Ask where the data recording equipment was placed to collect these findings.
And, if you are a resident of the UM Rd and see business as usual activity after July 25, please write and ask about this also.
Copy the below decision-makers and others who should be kept in the know about what's going on in this community, in regards to this quarry and its activities. They are:
