Meet Firefighter Morris Albert Williams, of the Uniacke & District Volunteer Fire Department who was awarded the first 60 Year “Municipal Long Service Award” medal in Canada. Morris (center) signed up in 1958 back when John Diefenbaker was the Prime Minister of Canada. He was awarded this special honour by Warden Jim Smith (right) of the Municipality of East Hants and CVFSA Nova Scotia Director Paul Maynard.(left)

The Uniacke & District Volunteer Fire Department is a rural fire department running two full-size pumpers, one mini-pumper, two tankers, one MFR-Rescue unit, one utility and a fire boat. During Morris’s 60 years he has held the positions of Lieutenant, Captain, Deputy and Fire Chief for three years. He joined the fire department at age 16. He has been married for 57 years to wife, Pearl and has had a son, grandson and son- in-law all become volunteer firefighters over the years.

The Municipal "Long Service Award” medal is available from the CVFSA to municipal units who wish to recognize members of their volunteer firefighting community. This medal ensures that a national standard is maintained as to appearance, presentation and awarding of such a medal. Municipal units can include incorporated villages, hamlets, towns, cities and government structures, below the federal and provincial-territorial level. As stated earlier, this is the first gold MLSA with three gold bars awarded in Canada.

Congratulations Morris from all your family, friends and supporters in and around Mount Uniacke!
