We currently have 89,000 customers without power. The storm so far seems to be progressing as predicted with strong winds now (over 100K gusts) in the western and central parts of the province. Many of our crews in those areas have now had to stand down from a safety perspective until the winds calm down which isn’t expected to happen for at least another 6 hours but those decisions will be made locally as per local conditions.
Current ETR’s for customers are set at 11:30 pm on Sunday. This is a default ETR based on the weather predictions and when we estimate our crews will be able to resume restorations. Once we can safely have crews on site we will be able to refine the ETR’s for customers. We still expect some customers to be out through the weekend and possibly into next week.
The earlier pre-storm outages this morning (approx 13,000) were largely caused by salt contamination on electrical equipment. Salt contamination is an issue for all coastal electric utilities. With the warmer temperatures and moisture in the air this morning, this caused electrical arcing leading to outages. Crews were working to restore these customers. The heavy rain we are experiencing should clean all the equipment of salt.
We’ve opened our four customer service centres in Kentville, Chester, Stellarton and Shelburne, as well as our head office in Halifax, as comfort centres from 8 AM to 8 PM beginning Thursday and through to the end of outage restoration.
Kentville — 3 Calkin Dr
Chester — 96 Valley Rd
Stellarton — 26 Bridge Ave
Shelburne — 261 Ohio Rd
Halifax – 1223 Lower Water St
