Over the winter a fire broke out on Beamish Road during the daytime / week hours. The fire was successfully extinguished by very competent volunteer firefighters. Yes, there was fire damage and the vehicles that caught on fire were extensively damaged, but it could have been much worse if it had not been for the quick action of 2 residents who saw the flames and called 911 to report the situation.
We have a volunteer fire department in our community and sometimes we don’t realize the dedication and involvement of the volunteers in situations such as this. When emergencies such as this fire occur during the day or the wee hours of the night/morning, where do the volunteer firefighters come from and how do they cope with their “normal” life responsibilities?
I have lived in this community for 38+ years and have been a supporter of our volunteers in any responsibility.
I myself have volunteered since the early 80’s. I know the responsibilities, dedication and pride of a volunteer when they step forward, but our volunteer fire department members go that extra distance with their dedication, time-involvement, capabilities, training, etc. and it wasn’t until this fire on a week day morning when our firefighters were at their daytime jobs / responsibilities that really brought it home to me that to be a volunteer fire fighter is truly a total commitment to the “job” and what happens when our volunteers are at work or asleep or at another emergency? Emergencies at any time are not “convenient” but we rely on our Volunteer Fire Fighters and they always go that extra mile and beyond what truly any of us can understand.
We requested, and received, a quick breakdown of the times and numbers of emergency calls that come in over a given timeframe so we could, as a community, start to really understand the total commitment of these volunteers. These are just the emergency calls. With all the training and re-training that is required of our volunteer firefighters, there’s really not much “down” time for them. As you can see, the number of calls and the times over a 3-month span for one volunteer fire department is truly exhausting and there are no restrictions on the time of the morning, noon or night.

Calls By Month
January	24
February	19
March	16

Calls By Time
00:00 – 06:00	11
06:01 – 12:00	19
12:01 – 16:00	5
16:01 – 20:00	16
20:01 – 23:59	8

If your neighbour or a family friend or a family member is a volunteer firefighter in our community or beyond, give
them a big round of applause and many thank you nods and slaps on the back for a job well done and a job that is never-ending and very impartial to the time or day.

Requests have been received for possible positioning of 2 streetlights along the South Uniacke Road. I will put the request through to the municipality but we cannot make any promises. Thank you to all the residents who responded and for being so diligent in assessing the needs.
Several complaints have come in about the pot holes at / near the Canada Post mailboxes in South Uniacke. Thanks to all the residents who advised work was required. Canada Post has been contacted and the work was to have been done right away. Any follow-up by any resident re: further work required, please contact me.
Many thanks to the residents who attended the community meeting on April 17 at St. Paul’s to hear the proposal for the proposed Mount Uniacke Civic Centre. Some very good ideas were shared by both sides, however, more people need to come out and get involved and give your ideas and interest into this very worthwhile, long-awaited initiative. We hope to have no sitting room available for our community’s involvement in this project. Watch upcoming issues of the Uniacke Newsletter as well as the web site for more meetings. Posters will be displayed throughout the community for any meetings.
The gravel roads in Mount Uniacke are drying up nicely. Dept of Transportation has been through the community grading roads but the roads are still thawing/drying out. Some of the roads have gone through the transition and further grading will be required. Be patient as DOT / TIR are monitoring the roads and, as weather permits, they will do their best to keep the roads open for public use and safety.
The RCMP Seniors’ Fraud presentation / luncheon was a huge success and we thank Cst Les Kakyoni, Enfield RCMP; Arlene Bent, Mount Uniacke; Staff Sgt Archie Thompson, East Hants and the very entertaining and interesting presenters Ian MacDonald and Jo Barbrick. The presentation was serious, informative, funny and interesting and the relaxed atmosphere made everyone’s day. The opportunity was there for our community to meet most of the officers who will be supporting us once the new RCMP sub-station in Rawdon and the satellite office at the Mount Uniacke Library go through the building/transition stages and become permanent locations for the RCMP.

The Mount Uniacke C.o.P. was NOT successful in securing the Nova Scotia Justice Department’s grant this year for watering / maintaining the hanging plants in Mount Uniacke. We do want to proceed with having these plants but we require volunteers to come forward to offer to water these plants “out of the goodness of your heart” as the Mount Uniacke COP unit did for the first 2 years. We can purchase, transplant and hang the plants but the watering is out of our realm of feasible projects. John Bland had volunteered to water the plants the first 2 years but is not able to do so this year due to health problems. We will be applying for the grant again next year and will keep our fingers crossed that we are once again lucky enough to secure it and be able to sponsor the Sea Cadets in this beautification project.
If there is anyone out there who would like to come forward and offer your time and watering capabilities, we would greatly appreciate it. The gas will be paid for and the equipment is available to borrow and it comes with complete instructions. Please contact the C.o.P. through the Uniacke Newsletter web site – Editor – regarding this initiative.
We need to hear from volunteers very soon so arrangements can be made to purchase the plants and get them into the hanging baskets.
We have asked around and it has been relayed to us that the “brackets look interesting and good just as they are”.
Thanks in advance for any and all offers of assistance.
Mount Uniacke C.o.P.

Wednesday, April 17th was an important day in the Uniacke District. Over 80 residents attended a meeting to explore the concept of building a Civic Centre in the community. The meeting was well attended and an informative presentation was delivered by the Uniacke District Civic Centre Association Steering Committee.

Uniacke District Civic Centre Association Members include the following people:

Cyril McDonald, Councilor, District 13 Mount Uniacke / Lakelands: UDCC Sponsor

Rosanne Bland, Councilor, District 12 Mount Uniacke: UDCC Stakeholder

Allison MacEachern, PMP:
UDCC Brand Manager.
With over 18 years’ experience in the IT Industry and earning a PMP designation, Allison has advanced to Senior Project Manager and Director of IT. Allison has worked with her own children and other teens in
the community and she understands the value of a Community Centre for all ages to participate in a wide variety of community events, recreation and organized sports.

Charlie MacEachern:
UDCC Fundraising Manager
A Business Consultant and Business Development Specialist in the Commercial Marine and Offshore Oil & Gas industries, Public Works including the Canadian Coast Guard and the Department of National Defense. Throughout Charlie’s career, he has developed a long list of regional, national, international corporate and political contacts, and aims to attract funding and resources to Mount Uniacke for the construction of the Uniacke District Civic Centre.

Evan Teasdale, P.Eng.:
UDCC Project Engineer
A Project Engineer, Engineering Consultant, Evan is a registered Professional Engineer in Nova Scotia, PEI and NB as well as a member of the Young Professionals Committee for the Association of Professional Engineers of Nova Scotia, APENS. With recent growth and development of the Uniacke area, Evan is excited for the opportunity to be part of a committee to develop such a community-oriented project.

Robert Rankine:
UDCC Finance Officer
With over 16 years in the banking industry and recently retired from CIBC, Bob currently volunteers at the Canadian Red Cross, Beacon House and the UDVFD Annual Fair. Bob firmly believes a Community Centre is needed in Mount Uniacke. Recently retired, he is now able to devote the time to help make a proposed Civic Centre a reality.

Melodie Joy, PMP:
UDCC Project Manager
Currently a Project Portfolio Manager in the Retail Management & Digital Document Software industry, Melodie’s career in IT Project Management spans over a decade with deployments in over 40 countries. With over 20 years of business development and marketing projects, her experience incorporates rural community development (former Marketing Manager for Hants County), to International Project Management. Melodie is proud to be part of this community collaborative effort, and as the mother of a five year old, her motivation is clear.

In addition to a property tax explanation, the UDCCA team toured several facilities and presented their comparables to the community. Here is a summary of their research:

●Maskwa Aquatic Club, a million dollar facility in Halifax for paddling, swimming and outdoor recreational fun.
●Barrington Recreation Centre, a 2.5 million dollar, NHL size hockey & skating rink, curling rink, stands and a canteen.
●Brooklyn Fire Station & Civic Centre, a 3.7 million dollar fire station, community hall, kitchen, bar and offices.
●East Hants Sportsplex in Lantz, a 20 million dollar facility with 2 ice surfaces, 4 community rooms and indoor multi-purpose field.

Following the presentation, community members completed surveys outlining their wants and needs for a Civic Centre. Some of the feedback included desires for a community room, kitchen, boating, ice rink, curling rink, indoor pool, outdoor pool, canteen/food services, walking trails, community gardens, playground, ball/soccer fields, indoor driving range, walk/speed track, indoor multi-purpose field, skateboard park, sublet space (fitness/martial arts, Police, daycare, municipal offices), and retail space. Once the team has had a chance to compile the data, it will be published and communicated. A meeting will be scheduled and residents will be made aware of the details and next steps.
If you would like to share your thoughts on a Uniacke District Community Centre, please call Cyril at 866-3302
or visit us on Facebook at:

https://www.facebook.com/UDCCA

to complete a survey, leave your comments, and like our page.

Cost, capacity, size, services and location are all up to you, the community. This is your opportunity to have your say, so say it! BY the Community, WITH the Community, FOR the Community!

Stay tuned to this Newsletter and website, community signage, and Facebook for our next meeting/steps. If you attended the meeting on April 17th and shared your email or phone number, we will contact you. If you would like to contact us with any offers of time, labour, services or materials please call the number listed above or send a message via Facebook.
Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.
